We worked on CAD layouts to send to the laser printer. This layout combines the Sphere-Network model and the Pin-Network model layouts.

Revised 3D models to incorporate all three previous
models into one cohesive model. These are images (exterior
and interior views) of the "network" model revised to show
some elements from the "time" model.

January 28

Today we presented our 3D models in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. We were required to show 5 interior and 5 exterior views of each model.

I'm posting only a few images per model to save space.

The network "sphere" model could be improved by removing a smaller sphere with BooleanDifference command to create an interior space. The views from the inside out through the fenestrations might look pretty cool. Also, the shadows and light rays that enter the interior spaces might be nice too. I'm going to try this tonite.

The rendering in Rhino is pretty straightforward. I need to find materials and begin a library. Color is working for now.

The second network model had some nice qualities but may be difficult to transfer to the laser cutter. There is no exterior boundary or volume.

The concepts to think about are layers, voids, mass and casting. Also, a visible and "believable" structure must be present. Another important aspect is kinetics and how a body moves throught the space, how it affects the space and how the space--in return--adapts to the body.

I have been thinking about trying to incorporate all three 3D models into one model. Maybe taking elements from each model and combining them into one unique model.

Today we were required to take photos of our haptic models. We are trying to capture tectonics, light and space. From those images, I printed five images to present at class today.

The light table photos did not appear well. The models photographed outdoors in direct sunlight were of better quality.

The three photos chosen for 3D modeling were (1)the time image with black foam core, plexiglass, wire mesh and paper forming a spiral, (2) the second network image with push pins and transparent tubes elevating platforms with more pins and 3)the network image with a blue ball and white tubes protruding, .

I have been learning Rhino on my own and I am looking forward to utilizing what I know to build 3D models.

Second Day of Studio

January 23, 2009

It's Friday. Our Haptic Models were due today. Some were fun. Others were tough to create. We picked one and talked a little about it. The model I chose to present was made of black foam core, plexiglass, wire mesh and vellum. It represented "time" and had a swirling, wrapping image with the three plexi panels representing the milestones of life.
I'm taking photos of all of my models today. I will choose five good pics to share on Monday. After that, we will create digital models of the haptic models.
I'm definitely having fun!!

First Day of Studio

January 21, 2009

Today was the first day of studio. I was pretty excited about joining the "Emerging MutationsEM2" section. I really need to beef up my 3D skills and I'm hoping I can learn a bunch this semester.

We received Assignment 0.1--the Haptic Model. These will be fifteen "quick and dirty" models. The concepts are velocity, time and network. Five models per concept are required. I can't do much today--no materials. I will start the models tonite when I gather a variety of junk.

I'm really excited and hope to have a lot of fun!
